Last night, a friend of mine invited me to the
Wilmington Sea Dawgs
basketball game. I had a great time, and the Sea Dawgs won in a shootout against the number one team in the league, the Battle Creek Knights, who were 12-0 before their battle with Wilmington.
But at the start of the 2nd quarter, one of the Sea Dawgs' staff, Julie, approached my friend and I, and asked if I was interested in shooting the half court shot for a chance to win a weekend getaway for two in Myrtle Beach. Now, I'm definitely not the most outgoing guy in the world, so the thought of chucking a ball in front of 500-1000 people was not an opportunity I was thrilled about, but the prize sounded pretty good, so I decided to suck it up... Okay, first off, saving the show Heroes is probably not even possible at this point. It seems to be on an irreversible downward spiral, similar to a toilet being flushed (although, nowadays most people are comparing the show to the contents in the toilet). I was trying to figure out a way to quickly determine a date's day of the week using some kind of formula. To start, I figured there were a few things we already knew without having to look at a calendar:
There are 7 days a week
There are 12 months
Every 4th year is a leap year
The 1st of the month day of the week is the same as the 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th.
With this basic understanding, it became clear that at least some month's days of the week were similar. I decided to first see out what months had similar date structure during a non-leap year:
February, March, November
The 1st of June, August, and May all fall on their own days, and don't share with anyone. We call these brats.
