What are Your Most Important SEO Keywords? 8/31/10 12:39 PM

Bluetone Media  provides expert SEO services to hundreds of businesses

Before Bluetone can put a single piece of your search engine optimization plan into motion, we have to have a plan to start with. And usually, the first step in that direction is figuring out what your most important keywords are.

Unfortunately, this seemingly-simple concept is where a lot of business owners trip up.

Here’s why: they have read in books, or heard in seminars, that the way to sell products and services online is by having enough people find your website on Google, Yahoo, and Bing, and then making the right offer to them. Since you can’t have sales without traffic, it makes since to pick the “busiest” keywords – the ones that will attract the most traffic – as the ones to concentrate on, right?

Not exactly. The most-searched keywords usually underperform for two reasons: first, because you’re competing against dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of other business owners just like you who decided to focus their time and attention on those same terms and phrases. And secondly, because the most-searched keywords tend to be very general in nature, they convert at very low percentages. Put another way, people enter them into search engines because they don’t yet know what they’re really looking for – not exactly the picture of an ideal buyer, is it?

A better strategy for your business is to focus on keywords and phrases that indicate that the searcher is looking to make a purchase. These could be brand or product names, model numbers, or even prices… just so long as they indicate a need, rather than a simple curiosity. The best keywords aren’t always the ones you think are the best, or most popular – they’re the ones that can bring interested buyers to your website.

If you need some help making sure your SEO plan is as efficient as it is effective, contact BlueTone today to see how we can help you improve your positioning on Google, Yahoo, and Bing… not to mention your bottom line.

Net Neutrality for All! 11/6/09 1:26 PM

By now, I'm sure you have heard the over-the-top debate about weather or not everyone should be charged PER per they want to visit. Most people would agree, that is a little insane- no wait, very insane! For as long as the internet has been around we have all been paying for an internet connection (if that) and just roamed the entire internet for FREE. Why would congress want to all of a sudden change the rules today? To make more money of course! This chart explains a little bit more about what I'm trying to explain. As if our internet connection fee alone wasn't hard enough to pay, lets add some more fees on top of that!

From a business standpoint, BlueTone Media would be severely hurt if this were to take place. Users would have to pay extra money to visit sites like ours and our clients sites; resulting in less business for the majority of internet companies. I know like most of you, I like to do a big chunk of my holiday shopping online also and I know I don't want to have to pay extra just to have that privilege either. If it isn't broke, don't fix it!

Brand New Blue for You! 11/6/09 10:18 AM

Well, we finally got tired of all of the other kids showing off their new shoes, while our own kids' feet weren't looking too sharp.  So we took some time and tried to cobble out a new web site that we hope you'll enjoy.

BlueTone has been so busy the last several months working on some great sites for our clients that we've had to put off making our own site better.  It's been a long time coming, and we're still making the final tweaks, but we feel this is a much better representation of our design and development skills than our previous site.

As you can tell, our site has gone through a complete revamping.  We decided to abandon flash that our old header, navigation and portfolio pages relied on, and focus more using jquery and javascript, which doesn't rely on the viewer to have certain software installed and works on mobile devices.  Speaking of the navigation, we knew the blurry side nav wasn't working as well as we had hoped, and really ate up a lot of the content area, so we scrapped that and went with a simple, space-saving horizontal nav bar.

With BlueTone's customizable blog roll set up on the home page, we can get new posts to show up automatically, keeping that page consistently fresh.  And we're going to be doing a better job of keeping the home page and portfolio page up to date and current with the latest content.

Please spend some time looking around and let us know what you think.  We're excited with the new site and hope it provides a more inviting atmosphere for our visitors.

Facebook buys Friendfeed 8/11/09 7:23 AM

As of yesterday August 10th, two social networking sites have come together. Facebook has acquired Friendfeed. Bret Taylor, a FriendFeed co-founder stated, “Facebook and FriendFeed share a common vision of giving people tools to share and connect with their friends". Friendfeed cost a whopping 47.5 million dollars for Facebook to purchase. Facebook used many of Friendfeeds features when they began, such as the "Like" feature and real-time updates. Although Friendfeed has actual real-time updates, Facebook users have to refresh the page; hopefully Facebook will fix this feature in the near future. Facebook will keep Friendfeeds' employees, such as the creator of Gmail, Paul Buchheit. As of now all Friendfeed accounts will remain the same until long-term plans have been made.
